Stop Doing It ALL!
Trying to be all things to all people can be truly exhausting. If it’s just you in your business at the moment, or even if you have a small team around you, it can be really tough to keep all of those balls in the air.
But trying to do everything might also be having a detrimental effect on your business.
We’ve all heard the saying “Jack of all trades, master of none” and the reality is that if you’re currently trying to do it all, chances are you are ending up running around like a headless chicken and not doing any of them particularly well.
Whilst there are times during the start-up phase, when there's simply too much to do and it all hinges on you, and there's no choice but to knuckle down and get the job done, it's important to let go of that mindset once you're out of the start-up phase as it can really hold you back.
The key to success is focus.
We can naturally can only focus on a limited number of projects at any one time, and if you’ve got too many different goals and projects you're trying to work towards, then you’re unlikely to truly succeed at any of them.
Whilst it may feel as if everything needs to happen right away, in reality there's always an order of priority, and as much as you may say everything needs to happen right now, if that's physically not achievable then you can say it all you want, but you still can't make it happen.
Identify your top 3-5 projects that need to be completed in the next few weeks, the most important projects for moving you towards your goals. And then let go of everything else.
By eliminating the never-ending "to-do" list and attempting to do it all, you'll instantly reduce your overwhelm and stress levels, which will give an instant boost to your productivity. On top of that, allowing yourself the mental space to focus on just one task at a time, means you'll complete that task quicker, and to a higher standard.
Not only will you be happier, you'll be producing better quality work and producing it in less time. Those key projects you've identified will start to make rapid progress forward, which will help you to feel motivated and rewarded for your hard work.
Doing it all, a lack of focus, and multi-tasking are killers of productivity. The reality is the people who achieve more are the ones with laser focus. High achievers such as Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs all cite focus as being the key to their success. So if you want to accelerate your success it’s important to learn to focus in on those most important tasks, those key ones that really deliver results into your business, and to learn to (temporarily) forget about everything else.
I came across a great quote from Bruce Lee who said "The successful warrior is the average person with laser-like focus".
